So, why go organic? That seems to be the question on everyone’s mind. The answer is rather broad, and it seems to change depending on who you talk to. I, personally, made the choice to support the manufacturing of organic material because I wanted to help create a more sustainable future. I know that sounds vague, but if I delve into my logic a bit more, I think it might make make things more clear. For me, the environment is not only a place to spend quality time with my family and friends, but a place for me to grow as an individual. I’ve always loved going on hiking trips with my buddies, and even by myself every once in a while as a chance to reflect both internally and externally.
I think I’ve made it clear that I love the outdoors...who doesn’t? But why do I care about sustainability? I understand the importance of the public spaces that surround me and the overall fragility of them and I choose not to ignore it. As a resident of the Cape and Islands, I have to acknowledge that we have had one of the worst winters in a long time. One of my favorite beaches, which happens to be right down the road from where I grew up, was severely eroded by the storms that impacted our coastlines over the past few months. Seeing this destruction in a place where so many of my best memories were created and thinking about how many kids might not get to experience this beautiful space in the same way really had an impact on me. It's difficult for me to understand how others may not view the reason behind the increase in extreme weather events as the result of human interference with the natural environment. Only through sustainable, and thoughtful actions can we begin to make right all that we have done wrong before we realize that we have reached a point of no return.
All of this talk about beaches may seem a little off topic, but what I'm trying to convey is that sustainability has an effect on a diverse set of problems and because of this, people have different reasons as to why they care. It’s personal; It could be about protecting loved ones, the places we love, or even the things that we love. So yes, I support organic because I do not support the continual degradation of the planet, but I also do so because this place, these people, and these things matter to me. And whatever your reason is, I hope that you choose to care too!
Until then. Live Consciously!
